As a child, I could easily hop on my Schwin bike and run up to the local fabric store. I would walk in -taking in all the smells, sights. The strong odor of dye-stuffs, the color, the magic of dreaming what I would make next. I sewed all the time, making incredible things, I never read any directions, just the pictures as I sewed. The iron became my best friend to press things, and I was obsessed with fabric. I had a Great Aunt Louise, I inherited that gene from her.
I have some incredible textiles from her. The notions department also was like my candy store, the threads, the buttons, piping, ric-rac, ribbon.
My heart is racing. My favorite fabric store is PurlNYC - Purl Patchwork.
Patricia - Sounds like your local dry goods store was/is just like E A Davis - the wooden floors too! Notions, a great noun, one that you never hear these days, conjurs up all sorts of memories. I am a Purl devotee too! Just ordered some great fabric from Purl last night - will post today - their blog is great too - and I am the first on left... we have two more in the family who arrived at a later date!
exciting!!
Love seeing the fabric prints. So inspiring!
Love Amy Butler! Are you familiar with Purl soho? You must be. I must have a hoarder mentality because I always buy fabric, but unlike you I don't do anything with it.
Yes Corine - I absolutely LOVE purl soho - I am a knitter too - so it satisfies both of my fetishes - yarn and fabric
